VAT for restaurants in Ecuador in 2026: what to review when invoicing

The rate must be determined from the transaction, the taxable-event date, and current rules published by the SRI.

Do not configure a rate based on intuition

The rate depends on the nature of the transaction and current rules. The SRI page checked on November 5, 2026, reports rates of 0% and 13% for goods and services, together with specific rules; always confirm the classification that applies to what the establishment sells.

Time of the taxable event

For services, the SRI explains that the taxable event may occur when the service is actually provided or when full or partial payment or account credit occurs, depending on the taxpayer usual choice. The invoice must use the rate in force at the applicable time.

Food, drinks, and other charges

Do not assume that every item on a bill necessarily has the same treatment. Review products, services, promotions, charges, and correction documents under the tax classification defined by the business and its adviser.

What the restaurant should retain

Keep the relationship between the order, sale, payment method, and authorized document. BestTables facilitates this operational traceability, but determining rates and returns remains the responsibility of the taxpayer.
